Some 2,000 low-income union members and their families benefited from this year’s Gift from the Heart event organised by Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) and Chemical Industries Employees' Union (CIEU).

The event was held on 19 October 2019 at D'Marquee @ Downtown East and was graced by NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng.

All the beneficiaries were FDAWU and CIEU members who earn a monthly gross salary of below $2,200, or a per capita household income of below $850.

Each beneficiary was presented with two gift bags of daily essentials sponsored by CIEU and FDAWU branches worth $100.

The first bag contained items such as a $20 FairPrice Gift Card, white rice, vegetable oil, bee hoon, instant 3-in-1 cereal, and an assorted biscuit tin.

The second bag contained essential items from coffee and instant noodles to detergent and Tiger Balm Neck and Shoulder Rub.

Speaking at the event, Mr Ng said: “It is very heart-warming to see those from our unions coming together to present a helping hand to those that may be in need … All of us live in a country that has prospered. I am certain all of us want a better life for our children. And from what all of you have demonstrated today, I am confident that we can do it.”

Event Pop-Ups

The event saw 120 union leaders, co-workers from unionised companies and students from Institute of Technical Education (ITE) volunteer with the packing of the gift bags.

The beneficiaries were also updated on the various SkillFuture initiatives by NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and the Workfare Income Supplement scheme by the U Care Centre.

In addition, there were booths by NTUC LearningHub, ActiveSG and Vision Ease to inform participants about digital literacy, active ageing and eye care.
